If you are not contesting your traffic citation and you desire to attend traffic school
as a means to avoid having points added to your driving record, then you will need to enter
into a plea in abeyance agreement. The specific conditions are listed below and you will
need to agree to those before your case can be considered for approval.
If you want to be considered for the traffic school option, please review the information
under the Detailed Information tab and then fill out the form below.
The City of Orem offers a traffic school class as an option in resolving your moving violation.
Resolving your citation through traffic school will avoid having any points added to your driving record.
Questions concerning how a moving violation will affect your insurance should be directed to your specific
insurance company since it varies. If you are a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) holder you may want to
check with the Utah Driver’s License to see what impact the traffic school option has on your license class.
Traffic school is a 3 hour class offered several times a month to accommodate various schedules. The class is also offered once a month in Spanish.
Eligibility is based on your driving history. The clerks at the justice court will not be able to approve you for traffic school if your citation involves one of the following:
o Alcohol related offense
o Reckless driving
o Speeding citation that exceeds 30 mph over the posted limit or if your speed was double the posted limit.
o Citation that requires a mandatory appearance before the judge.
o You currently have a plea in abeyance pending in the City of Orem Justice Court.
o Your driving history does not meet guidelines established by the City Prosecutor and the Justice Court Judge. Currently, the approved guidelines indicate that your driving record must reflect 2 or less prior offenses (statewide).
Please be aware that if your citation has become delinquent and/or a warrant has been issued,
your request may be denied or enhancement fees may be added.
State law requires that you enter into a plea in abeyance agreement which outlines
the requirements to resolve your case through the traffic school option. The specific
conditions are listed below and you will need to agree to those before your case
can be considered for approval.
You will receive an email notification back from the court indicating if you have been
approved or denied for the traffic school option. Those notified they have been approved
will receive direction on how to complete the plea in abeyance agreement successfully.
Those denied will receive information about how they can resolve their citation. If you
do not receive notification back within 5 business days, check your email filters to make sure the
response has not been considered spam. If you still do not see a response, please contact
the court at 801-724-3900 to verify your request was received.
If you were cited for speeding in a school zone or failure to stop for a school bus, you are
required to appear in person and fill out a Notification of Enhancement form before your plea in
abeyance can be approved.
If you do not wish to be considered for the traffic school option, you can resolve the citation
through a bail forfeiture. This means you are not contesting the ticket and want to pay it to
resolve it. You can do this at www.utcourts.gov/payments , by contacting the court at
801-724-3900 or appearing at the court at 97 E Center, Orem (Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm,

to sign a promise to appear for a court date.
